Spinal Flow Technique
The Technique Behind the Calm You Feel on Retreat

Stress Gets Trapped in Your Spine. Spinal Flow Is How You Release It.

If you already know the mind and body are connected, this will make sense to you: every stress you don't fully process gets stored in your spine and nervous system, blocking your body's natural energy and keeping you locked in fight-or-flight. Spinal Flow is a gentle, specific technique built to release it — so your body can finally catch up to your inner work.

The Real Mechanism

Unreleased Stress Doesn't Disappear. It Blocks You.

Spinal Flow was developed over more than 20 years by Dr. Carli Axford, a chiropractor who combined clinical training with a deep study of the body's energy systems to answer one question: why does stress get stuck in the body — and how do you actually release it?

Here's what she found: every stress you experience — physical, emotional or chemical — that isn't fully processed gets trapped in your spine and nervous system as a kind of blockage. That blockage does two things at once. It interrupts the flow of what the technique calls your Life Force Energy — the same vital energy your yoga, breathwork and meditation practice are already trying to move. And it keeps your nervous system stuck signalling "threat," unable to fully downshift into rest, repair and digest.

This is why you can be doing everything right — the retreats, the podcasts, the daily practice — and still feel like your body hasn't caught up. Spinal Flow uses gentle, specific contacts along the spine to release those blockages directly, working with your body's own innate intelligence to restore both nervous system regulation and the flow of energy through you.

🧬

Nervous System Regulation

Every function in your body — digestion, sleep, immunity, mood — is directed by your nervous system. When stress locks it into fight-or-flight, healing takes a back seat to survival. Spinal Flow helps shift you into parasympathetic state — rest, digest, heal.

Life Force Energy

Spinal Flow combines an understanding of the spine, nervous system and Life Force Energy into one method that harnesses your body's innate ability to heal itself. Trapped stress blocks that energy — release it, and it moves the way it's meant to.

🕊️

The 7 Gateways of the Spine

Base. Foundation. Centre. Passion. Pause. Awaken. Power. Each gateway along your spine holds a different layer of stress — Spinal Flow moves through all seven, for a release that reaches your whole system, not just one symptom.

The Technique, Step by Step

What Actually Happens in a Session

Spinal Flow isn't a stretch, an adjustment or a massage. It's a precise, hands-on technique — light touch only, with no cracking, no manipulation and no force.

1️⃣

Gentle Contact, 33 Access Points

Your practitioner makes light, specific contact along 33 access points across your head and spine, mapped to the 7 Gateways — while you stay fully clothed and comfortable, lying on the table.

2️⃣

The Spinal Wave

That contact triggers what's known as the Spinal Wave — a wave-like release that moves through your spine and nervous system, unwinding the blockages held in each gateway.

3️⃣

Your Nervous System Shifts

As the wave moves through, your body shifts out of fight-or-flight and into a parasympathetic state — rest, digest, heal — where your innate capacity to recover takes over.

What You Might Feel

Every body responds differently. Common experiences include deep relaxation, warmth, changes in breathing, or spontaneous movement — some people feel emotional, others simply drop into a state like deep meditation. There's nothing you need to do. You just let your body do what it already knows how to do.

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable clothing you could do yoga in. Avoid jeans, belts, thick seams or shapewear. You'll stay fully clothed throughout — no undressing, ever.

How It's Different

Why "Stronger" Isn't the Answer — Different Is

Chiropractic and physiotherapy are valuable, well-established approaches — especially for acute injury, structural issues and rehabilitation. Spinal Flow isn't a replacement for either. It's built to reach something they generally aren't designed to: the nervous system pattern underneath.

Chiropractic & Physio

Focus: the joint or the muscle directly

Method: manipulation, adjustment or targeted exercise

Aim: correct the structure

Best for: acute injury, structural misalignment, rehabilitation

Spinal Flow

Focus: the nervous system driving the pattern

Method: gentle, specific, non-force contacts

Aim: help your body release and self-correct

Best for: stress-held tension, chronic patterns, nervous system regulation

Many of our clients use Spinal Flow alongside chiropractic or physio care — not instead of it. Ask us if you're not sure which is the right starting point for you.

Do You Recognise Yourself Here?

If Any of This Sounds Familiar, Your Nervous System Might Be the Missing Piece

You Meditate, Do Yoga, Eat Well — And Still Feel Stuck

You're already doing the inner work. Spinal Flow addresses the layer underneath it — the stress trapped in your body that mindset work alone can't always reach.

The Calm From Your Last Retreat Never Lasts

That reset you feel after time away is real — it's your nervous system briefly out of overdrive. Spinal Flow helps make that state accessible more than once a year.

You Know Your Triggers — But Your Body Reacts First

You've done the inner work and can name the pattern. But your body still braces before your mind even catches up.

Wired, Overwhelmed, Can't Switch Off

If your mind won't quiet down even when your body is exhausted, you're likely running on sympathetic overdrive — and Spinal Flow is built to help you come down from it.

Tired but Wired at Bedtime

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up already tense — all classic signs of a nervous system still on alert.

Chronic Tension That Keeps Coming Back, No Matter What You Try

Rest, stretching, other treatments — the relief never quite sticks. That's usually a sign the pattern is being held by trapped stress, not just tight muscles.
